The Graduate Education Team
Our multi-organization team spans many offices around campuses. Our hybrid structure allows us to draw on expertise throughout the Mason community to best support graduate education.
The Office of Graduate Education, part of the Office of the Provost, supports academic units by augmenting their efforts and administering internal graduate funding opportunities. We also administer the subsidized graduate health insurance program, oversee graduate academic appeals, manage the Graduate Council and graduate policies, and advocate for graduate students throughout their educational and professional journey.

Associate Provost for Graduate Education, Office of the Provost
Associate Director in the Department of the BioengineeringDr. Laurence Bray is the Associate Provost for Graduate Education at George Mason University and serve as Chair of the Graduate Council. Dr. Bray provides overall leadership for the University's portfolio of graduate activities. Prior to her role, she oversaw a wide range of departmental, school and university-wide educational and research activities as a faculty member and administrator in the Department of Bioengineering.
Graduate Education Assistant, Graduate Education an Office of the ProvostJoe joined the Mason community as a part-time temp in February, 2018. He was assigned to the Accreditation and External Reporting Office (AERO) to assist with preparation of a self-study accreditation report for all Mason student licensing programs. After that he briefly worked in Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) to assist with externship and internship program tracking and databases.
Graduate Student Coordinator, Graduate Education an Office of the ProvostMary joined the Office of Graduate Education part-time in 2021. She holds a Master’s in Education from Wesley College. She assists the Graduate Education Manager with administering the Office of Graduate Education internal scholarships, fellowships, grants, awards, and other forms of student support.
Associate Director for Graduate Academic Success, Graduate Education an Office of the ProvostGraduate Academic Success. In the Associate Director role, they work in collaboration with programs and schools to enhance support provided to graduate and professional students throughout their experience at Mason. Jason’s work is informed by over fifteen years of experience in higher education, with their most recent experience being at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) assisting academic department leadership in their cultivation of positive department climate changes.
Director of Graduate Academic and Student Affairs, Graduate Education, Office of the ProvostPallavi (she/her/hers) is the Director of Graduate Academic and Student Affairs in the Office of Graduate Education within the Provost's Office. She focuses on graduate policy development and implementation, management of the graduate academic appeal and policy exception process, provision of technical assistance to academic units, and carrying out the Office of Graduate Education's diversity, inclusion and equity initiatives. Pallavi joined Mason in 2017 after serving as Director of Legal Clinics for George Washington University (GW) Law School.
Graduate Education Manager, Graduate Education an Office of the ProvostAkitta (she/her/hers) joined the Office of Graduate Education in 2012. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Studies with a minor in Business Management and is currently working towards a master's degree in Social Entrepreneurship here at Mason. Akitta serves as the Financial Manager for the Office of Graduate Education by providing oversight to internal graduate student support finances.

Graduate Professional Assistant for Graduate Student Leadership and Advising
Doctoral Candidate, Carter School for Peace and Conflict ResolutionBernard A. Atieme joins the Graduate Student Life team as Graduate Professional Assistant for graduate student leadership and advising. He has extensive experience mentoring student leaders and supporting student organizations in his academic and professional life. Bernard is currently a doctoral candidate at Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution at George Mason University. His master’s degree was in political science, emphasizing politics and public policy.
Director, Graduate Student Life, University LifeAs the Director of Graduate Student Life, Julie Choe Kim, Ph.D. (she/her/hers), promotes the success and well-being of Mason graduate students through engagement in professional development, personal development, community-building, and diversity, equity, and inclusion opportunities. She also serves as advisor to the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GAPSA). Julie has worked in student affairs in higher education for 20+ years in areas including graduate student life, student activities, multicultural affairs, and residence life.
Assistant Director, Graduate Student Life, University Life
PhD Candidate, Cultural StudiesAs the Assistant Director of Graduate Student Life, Austin A. Deray's (he/his/him) primary focus is Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion, Community Building, and Well-Being initiatives & programming for Mason’s graduate and professional student populations and oversees the management of the units communications. Austin joined the Mason community as a Graduate Professional Assistant for Graduate Student Life in August of 2016, after over ten years working in higher education both as a faculty member and Higher Ed professional.
